Black magic

Blaž Jerman; Technician

  • Where were you living in childhood and where do you live now?

I have lived in Ankaran my entire life.

  • What have you studied and what were the motives for your decision?

I completed my undergraduate studies in Computer Science at the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Information Technologies at the University of Primorska (UP FAMNIT). My decision was driven by my passion for technology and problem-solving.

  • How would you describe your work to someone outside your field?

Black magic.

  • What does your typical working day look like?

I spend most of my day working in front of screens and handling various technical components. Occasionally, I experience unexpected electrical shocks while testing PCBs, and sometimes I even witness the infamous ‘magic smoke’ escaping from integrated circuits.

  • What makes you excited about your work?

The thrill of designing, prototyping, and creating new things that no one has made before.

  • And what is the biggest challenge at your work?

The hardest part for me is stopping. When I’m working on a project, I get completely absorbed in it.

  • Which scientist or scientific achievement are you fascinated by and why?

I admire scientists who push the boundaries of innovation, especially in electronics and computing.

  • Tell us about the work of art (books, music, movies, theatre, dance, visual arts) that has a special place in your life.

I appreciate creative works that challenge conventional thinking.

  • What have you read, listened to, or watched lately?

I haven’t watched or read much lately because I’m always working on something. However, I plan to watch Common Side Effects.

  • Which place on the Slovene coast do you like the most?

Debeli Rtič, because it’s close to me and full of nature.

  • What makes you enthusiastic?

Technology, innovation, and the process of turning an idea into a functional product.

  • Characterize your life’s guidance or an important realization (or epiphany) you have experienced.

Hands-on experience is the best way to learn, and setbacks are steps toward success.

  • What does the charm of wood mean to you?

As a child, I played a lot with wood, designing toys and fun objects from it. Wood represents creativity and hands-on craftsmanship to me.
