Dr. Ana Slavec, InnoRenew CoE and University of Primorska’s researcher, together with researchers Luka Petravić, Boštjan Bajec, Evgenija Burger, Eva Tiefengraber, and Matej Strnad from the University of Maribor, University of Ljubljana, ZD Maribor and UKC Maribor, published a new scientific article “Emergency physician personnel crisis: a survey on attitudes of new generations in Slovenia”, in the journal BMC Emerg Med.
They conducted a survey among medical students and doctors before choosing a specialisation and the findings suggest that measures such as increasing salaries, establishing standards and norms and allowing for a better work-life balance could significantly encourage young doctors to choose less popular specialisations.
Results of the newly published study represent the largest and most comprehensive study published in this field in Slovenia to date and quantify the views of medical students and doctors who have not yet chosen a specialty. The results could be used to design a labour policy that better accommodates younger doctors, entering the labour market, and help fill gaps in specialty areas that have low interest but are nevertheless very important for the functioning of the whole system.
