Dr. Matthew Schwarzkopf from the University of Primorska, officially became President of the Society of Wood Science and Technology (SWST).  This election by his international peers is recognizing his scientific contributions and leadership within the global wood science community.

At the recent 2026 SWST International Convention, held 7–12 June 2026 in Seoul, Republic of Korea, Dr. Schwarzkopf steered the event towards success alongside his counterparts from the Korean Society of Wood Science and Technology. SWST is an internationally recognized professional organization of wood scientists, engineers, marketing specialists, and other professionals concerned with lignocellulosic materials. Its members are dedicated to the sustainable and effective use of one of the most environmentally sound resources, wood, and to the development of new ideas, procedures, policies, and products to support society and industry.

In his remarks at the SWST-KSWST conference, Dr. Schwarzkopf emphasized the importance of education and scientific societies: “If you have ever worked with wood to build furniture, a piece of art, or even a building, you know that it teaches patience,” he said and added: “Perhaps the lesson here is not necessarily to slow down, but to grow wisely, just as trees do: strong, adaptable, and deeply rooted in our community. Increasing the use of wood as a renewable material is essential for supporting sustainable development, strengthening regional economic activity, and enabling the transition towards a low-carbon society.”
