Dr. Anna Sandak, Amina Selmanović, Dr. Jakub Grzybek, Sasikala Perumal, Edit Földvári-Nagy, Dr. Lei Han, Richard Acquah and Dr. Jakub Sandak, together with NewWave project partners BTG and Foreco, recently published a new scientific article “Wood Modification Using Fast Pyrolysis Bio-Oil (FPBO): Formulation Development, Characterization, and Evaluation of Wood Performance”, published in Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), on innovative wood modification process based on Fast Pyrolysis Bio-Oil (FPBO).
The study explores FPBO as a fully bio-based alternative to conventional wood preservatives, which are often fossil-based and may contain toxic components. Ten different formulations were developed and tested, followed by impregnation of radiata pine and comprehensive evaluation of material performance. The results identified three top-performing formulations that achieved an optimal balance between durability, environmental performance, and structural integrity.
The findings highlight strong potential of FPBO-based treatments as a sustainable, high-performance solution for advanced wood protection, particularly in outdoor applications.
This publication represents an important step towards greener and safer alternatives in the wood protection industry.
