On 5 February 2026, InnoRenew CoE, UP IAM, hosted a scientific workshop dedicated to research opportunities using the ELETTRA synchrotron. The event brought together researchers and experts from several international institutions, providing insights into modern synchrotron research methods.
The workshop began with a welcome address by Dr. Andreja Kutnar, InnoRenew CoE, UP IAM, department chair who emphasized the importance of networking and cooperation between institutions for developing innovative and sustainable solutions.
Dr. Dean Korošak, Vice-Rector of the University of Maribor and Dr. Frank Uhlig, Head of Institute of Inorganic Chemistry at TU Graz, highlighted the significance of access to advanced research infrastructure and the role of international collaboration in achieving scientific excellence in their opening remarks.
The workshop included presentations on the operation of several ELETTRA synchrotron beamlines (SYRMEP, SISSI, EXAFS and XRF). Participating scientists presented synchrotron-based methods and their practical applications in research. The synchrotron, operating at the Elettra Research Center in Trieste, enables highly accurate and in-depth studies, ranging from the study of material structures to the analysis of chemical compositions of samples and the development of new materials.
Dr. Andreja Kutnar presented current research projects at InnoRenew CoE, UP IAM and highlighted how these projects can benefit from the advanced capabilities of the ELETTRA synchrotron to gain additional research opportunities, enable in-depth analyses and contribute to new scientific insights. The workshop concluded with a lecture by Dr. Sumea Klokic. Research opportunities at Graz University of Technology (TU Graz) were also presented.
Additionally, workshop participants had the opportunity to visit the laboratories at InnoRenew CoE, which further encouraged in-depth discussions and the exchange of experiences among researchers.
The event provided an excellent opportunity to the latest research methods and the opportunities offered by ELETTRA synchrotron, while also contributing to strengthening international collaboration among research institutions.
The workshop was organized by Dr. Sumea Klokic from TU Graz.
