Dr. Rok Prislan, head of the InnoRenew CoE Acoustics Laboratory, was a guest on the “Ugriznimo znanost” (Let’s bite science) television show to talk about spatial acoustics.

Dr. Prislan discussed how sound is affected by the size and shape of rooms and different materials. Two important acoustic environments were presented—the anechoic room and its opposite, the reverberation room. Both types are part of the InnoRenew CoE Acoustics Laboratory to allow research on materials’ sound absorption or reflection and enable the development of new and innovative building products.

“The reverberation room is a special acoustic space that uses geometric variations and smooth surfaces to make sound bounce as much as possible within the room, thus extending the reverberation time and recreating a diffuse sound environment,” Urban Kavka, InnoRenew CoE assistant researcher, said.

In addition to its state-of-the-art infrastructure, the institute’s acoustics laboratory also has modern equipment to measure architectural and building acoustics as well as the dynamic response for structures of different sizes.
