Richard Acquah and Dr. Jakub Sandak, InnoRenew CoE, UP IAM researchers together with Jonas Niklewski from Lund University, recently published a new scientific article »BIM-Based Wind-Driven Rain Modelling Using ISO 15927-3 and Geometry-Based Exposure« in Building and Environment journal.
In the article they present a BIM-integrated method for modelling wind-driven rain exposure on building facades using geometry-based ray tracing. The study introduces a workflow that replaces tabulated wall-factor coefficients from the ISO 15927-3 standard with facade-specific exposure values derived directly from building geometry within the BIM environment. The results show that the method can capture facade sheltering effects and spatial differences in rain exposure with accuracy close to computational fluid dynamics simulations, while remaining fast enough for use in early-stage building design and durability assessment.
