Scientific article about acoustics of timber floors

Dr. Rok Prislan, InnoRenew CoE, UP IAM researcher, together with colleagues Angelo Aloisio from the Università degli Studi dell’Aquila, Dag Pasquale Pasca from the Norwegian Institute of Wood Technology, Thomas Hillberger from the University of Innsbruck, Roberto Tomasi and Mohammadreza Salehi from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Thomas P. S. Reynolds from the University of Edinburgh, Chiara Bedon from the Università degli Studi di Trieste, Sven Vallely from the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, Kemal Edip from the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, and Carlos Martín de la Concha Renedo and Iván M. Díaz  from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, recently published an article »Vibration-Based Serviceability and Acoustic Assessment of Timber Floors,« in Springer Tracts in Civil Engineering, Holistic Design of Taller Timber Buildings, which stems from the collaborative efforts of the COST Action HELEN (CA20139), a network dedicated to advancing knowledge on Taller Timber Buildings.

Timber floors present unique challenges in the built environment due to their distinctive physical properties. They are particularly susceptible to noise and vibration issues when compared to other construction methods, such as concrete floors. As sustainable building practices continue to drive increased adoption of timber construction, these challenges and acoustic considerations remain crucial for ensuring acceptable levels of occupant comfort, particularly as regulations and standards evolve to better address the complex interaction between vibration and acoustic performance in lightweight floor systems.
