Alexis Blondaz, intern at InnoRenew CoE; Main area of research/activities: engineering
I have lived in Dommartin, a small village in the Lyon metropolitan area, since my childhood. For my studies, I moved to Le Mans. As a co-op student, I alternate between these two places.
I study at ENSIM, an engineering school specialized in acoustic engineering, which is part of Le Mans University. I’ve always wanted to work in the field of sound, and during my research, I realized I needed a solid scientific and engineering foundation. So, I looked into how to become an acoustic engineer and discovered ENSIM.
When I started my engineering studies, I chose to become a co-op student, which means my education is complemented by working in a company. The company I work for is called id | acoustique, and it specializes in acoustic treatment for collaborative workspaces.
In France, my main task is to design solutions that are both aesthetic and efficient. I use various tools to help me, such as 3D modeling software. At InnoRenew CoE, I’m working in a completely new field for me: psychoacoustics. I also develop user interfaces for my psychoacoustics studies and assist with recording sound samples for research.
I think it depends on the goals I set for each day. For example, when I start learning new software or a programming language, I spend time watching YouTube videos and tutorials. However, most of the time, I encounter bugs and issues, so I end up spending more time trying to fix them and researching solutions.
As I mentioned, psychoacoustics is a new field in acoustics that I discovered during my studies, and working in this area truly satisfies me. Additionally, it’s my first time working in a laboratory and being involved in research. I’ve learned a lot at InnoRenew, not only about acoustics but beyond.
The hardest part is trying to get rid of all the bugs and issues you encounter. We always make mistakes, or users make choices you didn’t anticipate. It’s especially challenging when you’ve just started the day before.
I’m fascinated by Lavoisier. He was a French chemist who was the first to determine that combustion and respiration are caused by chemical reactions with what he named “oxygen”. He also helped systematize chemical nomenclature. He is well known for his statement “In nature nothing is created, nothing is lost, everything changes,” which is the foundation of the law of conservation of mass in chemistry.
I’m a member of a wind band in a city near my village. We have rehearsals every week with the full orchestra, which is a great way for me to unwind during the week. My favourite type of music to play is movie music. It’s especially satisfying when I succeed in playing pieces from my favourite childhood animated films.
This year, I discovered the music of Adele Castillon. I really like her style, and her songs tend to stick in my head.
I also rewatched the entire Arcane series — both seasons back to back. The story takes place in the world of League of Legends and explores the origins of two iconic champions, the sisters Vi and Jinx. It also highlights the conflict between the wealthy surface and the poorer depths of Piltover. I love this series for its incredibly well-written characters and, in my opinion, one of the best soundtracks I’ve ever heard.
It’s a difficult question… I think it is Piran because it is a little city with a lot of historical monuments. And the view from the coast, it is magnificent.
What excites me in life are the simple moments shared with others. I love sitting down with a good beer and talking for hours, exchanging ideas, laughs, and memories. Spending time with friends—whether it’s a quiet evening or a spontaneous adventure—gives me energy and reminds me how important human connections are. These moments of togetherness and spontaneity are essential to my balance and joy in life.
One of the guiding principles in my life is to never give up—to stay committed and give my best, without letting pressure take away the joy. I believe in keeping moving forward, even when things feel uncertain. I try not to let stress or fear of failure overshadow the process.
The charm of wood reminds me of part of my family who live in the French Alps. It makes me think of mountain chalets, nature, and fond memories of family moments shared over a good meal. It’s a calm and peaceful atmosphere.
