ARCHI-SKIN part of the European Commission’s campaign Science4EU

The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation recently launched the Science4EU campaign. In the campaign they are highlighting how EU supports scientists, researchers and innovators in pushing the boundaries of knowledge.

Among the inspiring projects is also ARCHI-SKIN Bioinspired living skin for architecture, led by Dr. Anna Sandak. Researchers are turning to nature in developing a self-healing, bioactive coating inspired by fungal biofilms. Generally, protective coatings on buildings contain chemicals that harm the environment. This “living skin” can be used on wood, concrete or plastic surfaces to shield it from weather. Unlike chemicals, fungi are safe for people, making this research a fresh, eco-friendly alternative to conventional materials in construction.
