Discovering new ideas and solving complex problems

Donya Bazyar Khoshroodi, assistant researcher

  • Where were you living in childhood and where do you live now?

I was born and raised in Iran. The beautiful and nostalgic nights of Tehran, its cafes, galleries, and friendly gatherings are always with me. Recently, I moved to the lovely town of Izola in Slovenia.

  • What have you studied and what were the motives for your decision?

I studied Railway Track and Structures Engineering for my Bachelor’s and Construction Engineering and Management for my Master’s. Engineering, for me, is a way to solve complex problems and bring positive changes to the world around me, and it’s through this that I learned the art of building.

  • How would you describe your work to someone outside your field?

I work on developing adaptable TCC floor systems, focusing on making structures reusable, recyclable, sustainable, efficient, and durable.

  • What does your typical working day look like?

My day includes research, meetings, analyzing data, testing samples in the lab, and working on design and construction plans.

  • What makes you excited about your work?

The exciting part is that I can use engineering and technology to make the world a better place to live.

  • Tell us about the work of art (books, music, movies, theatre, dance, visual arts) that has a special place in your life.

I am passionate about art. I read books, watch movies, and have experience in acting. I also work on singing, which is something I truly enjoy. For me, art is not just a hobby but a way to express emotions and gain a deeper understanding of life.

  • What have you read, listened to, or watched lately?

Recently, I watched Prima Facie, a powerful one-woman play about a defense lawyer who confronts the flaws in the justice system after experiencing sexual violence. It was performed by Jodie Comer, whose compelling performance deeply conveyed the emotional weight of the story.

  • Which place on the Slovene coast do you like the most?

One of the most popular spots on the Slovene coast is Piran. It’s a town with Venetian architecture and a beautiful view of the Adriatic Sea, offering a charming, historic atmosphere.

  • What makes you enthusiastic?

I’m enthusiastic about discovering new ideas and solving complex problems, especially when they have the potential to make a positive impact. I’m also passionate about learning from different art forms.

  • Characterize your life’s guidance or an important realization (or epiphany) you have experienced.

A few years ago, a failure taught me the valuable lesson that I need to prioritize myself first in life. It was a realization that reshaped my perspective and helped me focus on my own well-being and growth.

  • What does the charm of wood mean to you?

Exactly! Wood not only has a warmth and a unique scent that makes moments feel dreamy, but it also gives you the sensation of connecting with nature. The sense of authenticity and simplicity that comes from wood makes it one of the most beautiful and comforting natural materials.
