Tara Vovk, Young researcher; Main area(s) of research/activities: Acoustic comfort in the living environment
I am from Ljubljana, born and raised. After living abroad in the USA for 5 years, I have now moved back to Ljubljana and commute back and forth to Izola.
I obtained my bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and master’s in construction management. I have always been drawn to problem solving and real-life application, so an engineering field proved to be very fulfilling in that sense.
I would say that I am exploring the link between sustainable materials and their acoustic performance while optimizing comfort in the living environment.
At the moment I am still doing a lot of learning and getting acquainted with specific acoustic concepts, so I spend most of my time at my office desk studying and researching.
I am very excited about having a purposeful research area and diving deep into a topic that interests me. I really hope to do meaningful work that will be of use to others as well.
The steep learning curve – being presented with a lot of new and challenging information all at once.
Tough to single out one person/achievement. But to steer slightly away from my area of research, I am also very interested in history. I am particularly fascinated by the role of Alan Turing in cracking the Enigma in the 2nd WW. His ability to think outside the box left a legacy that still shapes the world of machine learning and AI.
I consume plenty of art through different media. I particularly enjoy reading because it can transport me to so many different worlds. I am also a big movie buff and like to stay updated on critically acclaimed features. One of my favourite tv shows is “Normal People”, and favourite musical artists Zach Bryan and U2.
I am currently reading “Intermezzo” by Sally Rooney, my favorite novelist. I have also just rewatched the HBO show “Chernobyl” which is one of my favorite limited series of all time, I strongly recommend it!
I really like the Piran salt fields and taking a walk through.
Discovering new things. Not just at work but also finding a new hobby, a new musical artist, a new sport, a new book series, etc.
If you do something that excites you and you enjoy doing, you will no doubt be good at it! And also, to not take life too seriously and BE KIND to others.
I am always in awe how wood can make a space feel so incredibly homey and cozy.
