Visit to the Chief Architect of Lviv in Ukraine

Dr. Andreja Kutnar, and Dr. Michael Burnard, together with Aleš Oven, visited the Chief Architect of Lviv, Anton Kolomieitsev, in the offices at the City Hall in Lviv, Ukraine.

He presented the urban planning reforms in Lviv as well as some projects of special interest, like the hospital expansions to support the influx of Ukrainians injured in the war. This included vertical extensions with timber, a special maternity ward, a factory for producing prosthetics. Timber and nature featured heavily in all those projects, highlighting the city’s commitment both to sustainability and healthy environments. He also introduced the Unbroken project which has been part of these efforts.

The nature paths and outdoor rehabilitation areas linked to the maternity ward won an NEB Prize this year.

Together they discussed how it would be possible to contribute the works in progress and future activities, including trying to mobilise timber producers to help supply Ukraine with the elements needed for new construction and reconstructions.
