I’m fascinated by all forms of art

Sarah Julin; intern at InnoRenew CoE, Main area(s) of research/activities: Building and public works engineer, civil engineering

  • Where were you living in childhood and where do you live now?

I grew up in Fontaine-La-Soret, a former village of Normandy in France. Now, I still live in Normandy but in Rouen.

  • What have you studied and what were the motives for your decision?

I started by completing a DUT (2 years) in civil engineering and sustainable construction. Once I graduated, I went to a work-study construction engineering school (3 years). Now, I’m in the second year and I’m an apprentice as a construction manager.

I got interested in construction at a very young age. I’ve always loved architecture and the beauty of buildings. Then this admiration turned into curiosity about how construction worked and how buildings were designed from the start to finish.

  • How would you describe your work to someone outside your field?

My work involves managing construction projects. This includes overseeing the planning, coordination, and execution of construction activities to ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. I collaborate with various stakeholders, including architects, engineers, contractors, and clients, to bring building designs to life.

  • What makes you excited about your work?

I’m excited by the continuous learning opportunities in my career, the human interactions, and the teamwork involved. I also find great satisfaction in seeing the tangible results of our efforts as the construction projects come to fruition.

  • And what is the biggest challenge at your work?

My biggest challenge was overcoming my shyness. Today, my challenge is to take more initiative and confidently lead projects.

  • Which scientist or scientific achievement are you fascinated by and why?

I have always been very curious about space subjects, and in this area I have two projects that I find very interesting:

  • The James Webb Space Telescope because it allows to study the formation of stars and galaxies, the atmospheres of exoplanets and the origins of life, promising to transform our understanding of the universe.
  • SpaceX and reusable rockets because it represents a major advancement in space technology. Reusability reduces the cost of access to space and has the potential to make space exploration more sustainable and more frequent.

  • Tell us about the work of art (books, music, movies, theatre, dance, visual arts) that has a special place in your life.

I’m fascinated by all forms of art but if I had to choose the main one it would be music, because I listen to music almost all day long and of all different styles. But cinema is also important to me, I really like auteur films. The best movie I saw was in 2023 – “Close” by Lukas Dhont.

  • What have you read, listened to, or watched lately?

I recently finished the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio.

  • Describe your very first impression of Slovenia.

My first impression of Slovenia was that it is a beautiful country with its mountains, coastline, and stunning landscapes. I was really excited to visit. Now, after spending some time here, I’m even more impressed by the warmth and hospitality of the people and the rich cultural heritage.

  • What makes you enthusiastic?

What makes me most enthusiastic in life is the opportunity to travel again and again. I’m passionate about exploring new places, meeting new people, and immersing myself in different cultures. Traveling broadens my perspective, enriches my experiences, and continuously inspires me both personally and professionally.

What also makes me enthusiastic is sport, I have been doing artistic gymnastics since I was 5 years old, including 10 years in competition. Today, I continue gymnastics as a hobby of course, but I also perform in Pole Dance.

  • Characterize your life’s guidance or an important realization (or epiphany) you have experienced.

An important realization in my life came after overcoming a period of depression through therapeutic support. I learned the importance of putting myself first and always staying true to my own values for the sake of my mental health. I realized the need to always find the positive in situations to keep moving forward. I also understood the importance of not burying my emotions but rather living them fully and communicating.

  • What does the charm of wood mean to you?

As you can see, my professional background is mainly based on civil engineering and concrete. This internship at InnoRenew CoE offers me the opportunity to learn a lot more about the world of wood. Wood is still one of the oldest natural construction materials. It has been used for thousands of years to build buildings.

The charm of wood lies in its versatility, natural beauty, and sustainability. Wood has a timeless appeal, whether in traditional or modern architecture. Its warm tones and textures bring a unique character to any structure, making spaces feel more inviting and connected to nature.
