InnoRenew CoE performed a training on timber buildings

InnoRenew CoE researchers performed a training about timber buildings in the week of 3-7 June 2024 for architects, furniture manufactures, designers and constructor from Cyprus.

The workshop began with an introduction of participants and an overview of the program. Eva Prelovšek Niemelä initiated the discussions with a session on designing timber buildings. Following Dr. Jakub Sandak addressed moisture control during construction and service life of timber buildings. Dr. Mohammad Derikvand led the sessions on engineered wood products for construction and different types of timber construction, including timber frame, mass timber, and hybrid construction. Dr. Anna Sandak lectured about wooden facades, highlighting engineered living materials.

Participants learned also about the certification of timber construction elements, presented by Dr. Andreja Kutnar, and restorative environmental and ergonomic design, presented by Dr. Michael Burnard. Richard Acquah led a discussion on the integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in timber buildings, emphasizing the role of digital tools in enhancing design and construction efficiency.

The final day of the training focused on acoustics in timber buildings, with Dr. Rok Prislan leading two sessions on the topic. Dr. Michael Burnard introduced the New European Bauhaus and the New European Bauhaus Academy, the two initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable and innovative building practices in Europe.

During the week also a field trip was organized where participants could engage more with several InnoRenew CoE researchers. Participants visited the CLT production facility in Sevnica. They learned abut the manufacturing process, production and application of CLT in modern construction.
