From 13-18 May 2019, the Charm of Wood exhibition, designed by the InnoRenew CoE architects Eva Prelovšek Niemelä and Aarne Niemelä, was displayed at Cankarjev dom in Ljubljana. The purpose of the exhibition was to show wood as an attractive material for the production of diverse objects and buildings to the widest possible audience. More than 100 wooden items of various sizes – from furniture, lamps and washing basins to musical instruments, toys and jewelry – were on display.
The central part of the exhibition was designed from 48 cross-laminated timber panels (CLT) placed in a raster that resembled wooden carpet and represented construction material of the future.
Massive wooden construction from CLT panels was developed over a decade ago and is spreading rapidly throughout the world. The advantages of this type of construction are good seismic and fire safety as well as great freedom for architectural expression, thus the possibility of implementing more daring and demanding buildings. Because of these advantages and the material’s sustainability, the InnoRenew CoE buildings will be built predominantly out of CLT panels.
Wooden panels at the exhibition had a transitional role. After closing the exhibition, they will be used by CBD, d. o. o., a member of Living Lab InnoRenew, as an integral part of massive wooden stairs in Slovenian construction projects.
