Description:

The InnoRenew CoE is seeking a well-qualified individual to work on a collaborative research project with Aalto University, Finland. The research field is surface modification of wood. The researcher will be employed at InnoRenew CoE and become a doctoral candidate at Aalto University School of Chemical Engineering. The research project and its tasks will be performed in close cooperation with Aalto University. The candidate will be located approximately 50 % of the time in Izola, Slovenia and 50 % of the time in Espoo, Finland.

What are we looking for:

The emphasis of this position is on the development of a new surface modification treatment of wood including characterization of the properties and performance of the modified surfaces. Experience using Raman and FTIR spectroscopies, DVS, DMA, and other laboratory equipment is favourable.

What skills we expect:

The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in wood science/chemistry with wood engineering skills and experience in wood modification treatments and characterisation of wood surfaces. Further requirements include: excellent communication skills in English, the ability to interact with the industry and other researchers, and the ability to formulate and communicate new research ideas (research proposal preparation).

Lead IT Specialist

Location: Izola/Isola, Slovenia

Description:

The Lead IT Specialist will provide equipment, network, and ICT services support for the InnoRenew CoE. The Lead IT Specialist will manage devices (Mac, PC, tablets, phones, servers, research equipment), services (web services hosting, productivity, communications, Office 365, backups, custom tools), software licenses and installations, etc. The Lead IT Specialist will suggest and make decisions regarding equipment and services purchases. The InnoRenew CoE facilities, currently being designed, will involve a sensor network to monitor building performance which the Lead IT Specialist will assist in managing and maintaining.

This person will function as a critical team member in InnoRenew CoE operations. They will support users and implement systems that ensure the smooth operations at the institute. The InnoRenew CoE is currently growing. This position will eventually be supported by another IT support employee.

What we are looking for:

Tasks

  • Manage and support personal computers, tablets, phones, printers, and other related equipment
  • Manage and support internal networks, backup systems, internal servers, and other equipment (projectors, etc.)
  • Manage and support external services (web hosting, Office 365 services including email and cloud services, communications systems, etc.)
  • Work with external vendors that support and maintain equipment and services
  • Manage purchasing, inventories, and maintenance of ITC equipment
  • Coordinate with the Data Scientist in the implementation of the data management plan

Researcher – Optimisation

Optimisation of multivariate stochastic heterogeneous systems

Description:

The InnoRenew CoE is seeking a well-qualified individual to work on optimisation of multivariate stochastic heterogeneous systems. The tasks will be performed in close cooperation with Fraunhofer WKI, Germany and the Fraunhofer Center for light, environmentally friendly structures.

What are we looking for:

The emphasis of this position is on the development of procedures and code for optimization of hybrid, modular buildings with emphasis on various criteria such as modularity, mass, energy efficiency, construction speed and costs, and sustainability. The project will focus on development of a decision tool that will allow consideration of multiple criteria and uncertainties of various input parameters and data.

What skills we expect:

The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in civil engineering with good mathematical skills and a programming background (Matlab or similar) and the ability to learn and work independently in a team environment. Experience in Matlab programming is a must. Further requirements include: good communication skills, ability interact with the industry and other researchers, ability to formulate and communicate new research ideas (research proposal preparation).

Data Scientist

Leader of the Experimental Design and Data Analysis group

Description:

This position will lead the Experimental Design and Data Analysis group, a small department of data scientists and analysts, and will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring adherence to the institutes data management plan. The position will guide the development of the institutes open data policy, practices, and implementation. This person will primarily perform analysis of collected data or existing data sets (e.g., experimental or open data from secondary sources). Human Health in the Built Environment Research Group Leader

This position will lead the Human Health in the Built Environment Research Group at the InnoRenew CoE. The primary goal of this research group is to determine how the built environment can provide positive health impacts for building users and occupants, and the mechanisms that affect human health. The research group leader will create and lead a team of researchers and technicians in developing and implementing the research plan of the InnoRenew CoE. The team is expected to be an interdisciplinary team of human health researchers with areas of expertise ranging from kinesiology and psychophysiology to neurology and environmental psychology. The research group leader will play a critical role in determining how to build this team, choosing the researchers and their disciplines to fill out the research group. The Human Health in the Built Environment group is one of 5 key research groups at the InnoRenew CoE, and it will jointly work on projects with researchers from other groups.

What are we looking for:

The primary duties of the research group leader will be to design and implement a research plan to achieve the objectives of the institute related to human health in the built environment. The research group leader will be responsible for acquiring funding to support their research group and the institute. The research group leader will be responsible for leadership, oversight, and mentoring of junior researchers in their research group.
