The InnoRenew CoE is seeking highly motivated and qualified applicants for a research position in the design, development and optimisation of sensor networks. This researcher will work within the Information and Computer Technologies Research Group with a focus of smart solutions for sensor development, data collection and data engineering in projects related to sustainable buildings and renewable materials. A critical team member is required who is eager to work in a highly interdisciplinary environment on a wide range of topics such as building information modelling, industrial optimisation, composite materials, wood modification, healthy living in the built environment and cultural heritage.

Tasks

The duties of the sensor network researcher are to perform design, deployment, monitoring and analysis of sensor networks in national and international research projects, work as an expert with industry partners, participate in preparing funding proposals, aid in the implementation of the research objectives of the institute, and pursue their own research agenda in line with the goals of the InnoRenew CoE. The researcher should maintain state-of-the-art knowledge of the relevant fields, publish research results in high-impact journals, and present research and development at the InnoRenew CoE to the broader community at scientific and professional conferences.

Required qualifications

  • Advanced degree in telecommunication, electrical engineering, informatics or related area
  • At least 3 years of experience in sensor network research
  • Research record demonstrating expertise in related fields
  • Demonstrated current knowledge of the design, development and analysis of sensor networks
  • Experience in efficient and secure data processing
  • Expertise in digital signal processing
  • Experience implementing and working as a key member of research and development projects
  • Excellent communication skills, written and spoken English

Preferred qualifications

Composite Material Researcher

The InnoRenew CoE is seeking highly motivated and qualified applicants for a Composite Material (CM) Researcher position. The CM Researcher will be responsible for the development and optimization of modified wood-based composite related materials. The CM Researcher will be part of the Renewable Materials Composite Research Group that is focused on advancing building efficiency and human health through the development of composite materials with enhanced insulating, structural, aesthetic, durability, and environmental properties. The position is located in Izola, Slovenia.

Tasks

The duties of the CM Researcher are to perform structural and non-structural product optimization with a focus on modified wood-based composite manufacturing and development of new composite related materials. The CM Researcher is expected to understand the impact of modified wood, processing techniques, and environmental conditions on the durability, serviceability, and performance of developed composite materials. The CM Researcher is expected to prepare and aid in the preparation of funding proposal, aid in the implementation of the research objectives of the institute, and pursue their own research agenda in line with the goals of the InnoRenew CoE. The researcher should maintain state-of-the-art knowledge in composites that results in assessing the potential for new products and advancing current composite materials.

Required qualifications

  • Ph.D. in wood science, material science, chemistry, biomaterial engineering, or related area
  • Experience in modified bio-based materials with a focus on improving performance
  • At least 3 years experience in composite material development
  • Research record demonstrating expertise in composite related fields
  • Experience in product design and optimization
  • Understanding of fundamental bio-based material properties
  • Experience implementing and working in interdisciplinary research projects

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience conducting research on modified wood composites for high performance applications
  • Experience in advanced mechanical and analytical testing related to fiber and nanoparticle raw materials and related composites

Computational Modelling of Biomaterials

The InnoRenew CoE is seeking highly motivated and qualified applicants for a research position related to computational modelling of biomaterials and simulation of its transformation processes. This researcher will mainly collaborate with Wood Modification group that focusses on natural resources modification and functionalization; however, contribution to other InnoRenew CoE research groups will be appreciated. The position is located in Izola, Slovenia.

Tasks

It is expected, that the computational modelling researcher will use a materiomics approach for investigation of materials, considering the complexity of their structure, properties and functional relations. In this case numerical models should be used as bridges between a material’s description and its real life performance. Consequently, mathematical, statistical and computational methods should be implemented to create virtual materials that have properties close to the requirements.

In addition to supporting the Wood Modification group, the researcher will prepare or aid in the preparation of funding proposals and aid in the implementation of the research objectives of the institute, and pursue their own research agenda in line with the goals of the InnoRenew CoE.

Required qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Computational Chemistry, Material Science, Wood Science or related area
  • Experience in conducting multi-scale modelling of bio-based materials
  • Demonstrated current knowledge of material modelling and simulation
  • Experience in conducting highly efficient computation for design of new materials
  • Research record demonstrating at least 3 years of scientific experience in related fields
  • Experience implementing and working in interdisciplinary research projects
  • Excellent communication skills, written, and spoken English

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience regarding implementation of biomimicry for biomaterials design
  • Experience with current and emerging trends regarding materials modelling and simulation

Human Physiology Researcher

The InnoRenew CoE is seeking highly motivated and qualified applicants for a research position focused on understanding and improving the human health impacts of the built environment. This researcher will mainly explore the psychophysiological responses to stimuli and recovery from them in varying built environments. The researcher will implement existing experimental and monitoring techniques as well develop new methods to study the relationship between the built environment and how it can impact human health. This position is within Human Health in the Built Environment research group at the InnoRenew CoE, located in Izola, Slovenia.

Tasks

The main duties of the researcher are to: establish an array of experimental procedures to assess the impact of building design decisions (e.g., material selection, lighting, air flow, etc.) on building users either at home, work, school, or elsewhere; design and conduct experiments to assess these impacts; and, report their findings in typical academic outlets as well as in other non-academic fora.

The researcher will collaborate with the other research groups of the InnoRenew CoE as well as external partners in completing ongoing and new research projects. In addition to their research work, this researcher will be expected to develop new project ideas, contribute to funding proposal preparation, and lead projects. In addition to the broad human health scope, there is special interest reducing stress, improving stress recovery, reducing sedentary behaviour (increasing activity) at offices and at home, and in addressing the needs of older adults in the built environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in physiology, psychophysiology, or related field.
  • Experience in developing and conducting experiments monitoring human psychophysiological responses, including ethical concerns and gaining review board approvals
  • Demonstrated current knowledge human health concerns in buildings
  • Experience in the design and analysis of planned experiments related to human health
  • Research record demonstrating at least 3 years of scientific experience in related fields
  • Experience implementing and working in interdisciplinary research projects
  • Excellent communication skills, written, and spoken English

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with the health and wellbeing needs of older adults
  • Experience assessing stress and stress recovery
  • Experience analysing experimental data in R

Doctoral candidate position

Thermal-hydro-mechanical treatment of wood

Description:

The InnoRenew CoE is seeking a well-qualified individual to work on a collaborative research project with Luleå University of Technology, Sweden. The research field is thermo hydro mechanical treatment of wood. The researcher will be employed at InnoRenew CoE and become a doctoral candidate at Luleå University of Technology, Wood Science and Engineering. The research project and its tasks will be performed in close cooperation with Luleå University of Technology. The candidate will be located approximately 50 % of the time in Izola, Slovenia and 50 % of the time in Skellefteå, Sweden.

What are we looking for:

The emphasis of this position is on the development of thermo-hydro-mechanical treatment for low quality wood for specific applications in the indoor built environment. The work includes behavior of wood during the treatment and when in use. Experience in studying wood properties, especially viscoelastic behavior of wood and stress-strain response of wood in relation to moisture content is favorable.

What skills we expect:

The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in wood science/chemistry with wood engineering skills and experience in wood modification treatments and characterisation of wood. Further requirements include: excellent communication skills in English, the ability to interact with the industry and other researchers, and the ability to formulate and communicate new research ideas (research proposal preparation).

Researcher – Optimisation

Optimisation of multivariate stochastic heterogeneous systems

Description:

The InnoRenew CoE is seeking a well-qualified individual to work on optimisation of multivariate stochastic heterogeneous systems. 

What are we looking for:

The emphasis of this position is on the development of procedures and code for optimization of hybrid, modular buildings with emphasis on various criteria such as modularity, mass, energy efficiency, construction speed and costs, and sustainability. The project will focus on development of a decision tool that will allow consideration of multiple criteria and uncertainties of various input parameters and data.

What skills we expect:

The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in computer science or civil engineering with good mathematical skills and a programming background (Matlab or similar) and the ability to learn and work independently in a team environment. Experience in Matlab programming is a must. Further requirements include: good communication skills, ability interact with the industry and other researchers, ability to formulate and communicate new research ideas (research proposal preparation), ability to work independently.
