Innovative surface modification

Description:

The InnoRenew CoE is seeking a well-qualified individual to work on a collaborative research project with Aalto University, Finland. The research field is in general wood modification. The researcher will be employed at the InnoRenew CoE and become a doctoral candidate at Aalto University, School of Chemical Engineering. The research project and its tasks will be performed in close cooperation with Aalto University. The candidate will be located approximately 50 % of the time in Izola, Slovenia and 50 % of the time in Espoo, Finland.

 

What are we looking for:

The emphasis of this position is on the implementation of biomimicry for development of a new modification treatment of wood, including characterization of the properties and performance of modified surfaces. Experience using Raman and FTIR spectroscopies, hyperspectral imaging, DVS, and other laboratory equipment is favourable.

 

What skills we expect:

The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in wood science, chemistry, material science, and/or biology, with experience in wood modification treatments and material characterization. Further requirements include: excellent communication skills in English, ability to interact with the industry and other researchers, and ability to formulate and communicate new research ideas (research proposal preparation). PhD candidate position – University of Primorska

Lifelong learning for scientific literacy in materials across professions, gender, age and culture

Description

The InnoRenew CoE is seeking a well-qualified individual to work on a collaborative research project with the University of Primorska. The researcher will be employed at the InnoRenew CoE and University of Primorska and enrol as a doctoral student at the Faculty of Education at the University of Primorska. The emphasis of this position is on the development of an innovative computer-assisted lifelong learning methodology for scientific literacy in materials across professions, career span, gender, age, and culture. The position is located in Izola and Koper, Slovenia.

Knowledge of materials, their properties, and behaviour are critical topics that influence sustainability and the sustainable development of a society. Collaboration between the education sector, industry, and research institutes will support the development of a framework to investigate the awareness gaps of diverse user groups across professional fields, career span, gender, age, and culture. It is expected that the researcher will use various research methods combining social science, usability studies (user-centred design, design-based research), and interdisciplinary approaches.

Goals and Tasks

The overall goal of the PhD project is to create content for a life-long scientific literacy programme focused on materials. The candidate’s main tasks will be:

  • preparation and execution of a research plan for interdisciplinary education in materials,
  • review of existing systems and comparison of the state of the art concepts for lifelong learning education,
  • development of training programs suitable for diverse user groups, and
  • development of innovative computer-assisted learning software.

The researcher will write articles for academic, professional, and lay-audiences to extend the reach of their research. Additionally, they will be involved in preparing at least one funding proposal seeking to extend research support their PhD research topic and field.

Preferred qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Social Science, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Computational Chemistry, Material Science, Wood Science, Civil engineering, Environmental engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related area
  • Advanced skills in computer-assisted learning
  • High motivation for implementing and working in interdisciplinary research projects
  • Excellent communication skills, written and spoken English
  • Ability to formulate and communicate new research ideas (research proposal preparation, scholarly publications)

Sensor networks researcher

Location: Izola/Isola, Slovenia

The InnoRenew CoE is seeking highly motivated and qualified applicants for a research position in the design, development and optimisation of sensor networks. This researcher will work within the Information and Computer Technologies Research Group with a focus of smart solutions for sensor development, data collection and data engineering in projects related to sustainable buildings and renewable materials. A critical team member is required who is eager to work in a highly interdisciplinary environment on a wide range of topics such as building information modelling, industrial optimisation, composite materials, wood modification, healthy living in the built environment and cultural heritage.

Tasks

The duties of the sensor network researcher are to perform design, deployment, monitoring and analysis of sensor networks in national and international research projects, work as an expert with industry partners, participate in preparing funding proposals, aid in the implementation of the research objectives of the institute, and pursue their own research agenda in line with the goals of the InnoRenew CoE. The researcher should maintain state-of-the-art knowledge of the relevant fields, publish research results in high-impact journals, and present research and development at the InnoRenew CoE to the broader community at scientific and professional conferences.

Required qualifications

  • Advanced degree in telecommunication, electrical engineering, informatics or related area
  • At least 3 years of experience in sensor network research
  • Research record demonstrating expertise in related fields
  • Demonstrated current knowledge of the design, development and analysis of sensor networks
  • Experience in efficient and secure data processing
  • Expertise in digital signal processing
  • Experience implementing and working as a key member of research and development projects
  • Excellent communication skills, written and spoken English

Preferred qualifications

  • Ph.D. in telecommunication, electrical engineering, informatics or related area
  • Experience in research on smart building and digitalization of industrial processes
  • Experience in data engineering, machine learning and optimisation methods
  • Previous success in grant writing, international project participation, and leadership
  • Experience working with industry in applying research results
  • Experience implementing and working in interdisciplinary research projects

PhD candidate position – Luleå University

Thermal-hydro-mechanical treatment of wood

Description:

The InnoRenew CoE is seeking a well-qualified individual to work on a collaborative research project with Luleå University of Technology, Sweden. The research field is thermo hydro mechanical treatment of wood. The researcher will be employed at InnoRenew CoE and become a doctoral candidate at Luleå University of Technology, Wood Science and Engineering. The research project and its tasks will be performed in close cooperation with Luleå University of Technology. The candidate will be located approximately 50 % of the time in Izola, Slovenia and 50 % of the time in Skellefteå, Sweden.

What are we looking for:

The emphasis of this position is on the development of thermo-hydro-mechanical treatment for low quality wood for specific applications in the indoor built environment. The work includes behavior of wood during the treatment and when in use. Experience in studying wood properties, especially viscoelastic behavior of wood and stress-strain response of wood in relation to moisture content is favorable.

The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in wood science/chemistry with wood engineering skills and experience in wood modification treatments and characterisation of wood. Researcher – Optimisation

Optimisation of multivariate stochastic heterogeneous systems

Description:

The InnoRenew CoE is seeking a well-qualified individual to work on optimisation of multivariate stochastic heterogeneous systems. 

What are we looking for:

The emphasis of this position is on the development of procedures and code for optimization of hybrid, modular buildings with emphasis on various criteria such as modularity, mass, energy efficiency, construction speed and costs, and sustainability. The project will focus on development of a decision tool that will allow consideration of multiple criteria and uncertainties of various input parameters and data.

What skills we expect:

The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in computer science or civil engineering with good mathematical skills and a programming background (Matlab or similar) and the ability to learn and work independently in a team environment. Experience in Matlab programming is a must. Further requirements include: good communication skills, ability interact with the industry and other researchers, ability to formulate and communicate new research ideas (research proposal preparation), ability to work independently.
